IMTS 2006
- The company displays eighteen machine tool models at the industry fair in Chicago.
Doosan Infracore attended International Manufacturing Technology Show 2006, held in Chicago from September 6 to 13. The company took advantage of this opportunity to enhance its presence in North America by showing a total of eleven new turning centers and seven machining centers. Customers responded favorably to the Doosan Infracore models that feature the same functions as top Japanese models and are clearly above the low-end and mid-range machine tools from US and Taiwanese makers.
Doosan Infracore also took aim at the market mainstream segment, and booth visitors were impressed by the models for machining standardized parts. The company unveiled soon-to-be-released versions designed exclusively for automotive parts, and demonstrations were made of multi-function machining and turning centers with built-in functions to prevent production jams.
Surging Machine Tool Exports to the US
The US economy shows signs of a slowdown and the Korean Won has remained strong against the Dollar. Despite the adverse conditions, the company's machine tool sales in the US for 2006 are up 30% year on year to an estimated US$158 billion. Importantly, this figure is double the US$79 billion in machine tools exported to the US two years ago.
Doosan Infracore's remarkable success in the American machine tool market can be attributed to a combination of factors, including a twopronged approach. The brand image has improved with the introduction of high-end models on the one hand, while market share has increased through the supply of mid-range and low-end models on the other. Meanwhile, the company continues to develop new models and now can deliver the same technological sophistication associated with such big names as Yamazaki Mazak, Moriseiki and Okuma. Finally, a nationwide sales and service network is now in place in the United States.
Doosan Infracore has attracted and developed ties with major dealerships, and the corporate stature is being strengthened in the US. Ongoing efforts are being made to diversify the customer base. For example, a newly formed team focuses on buyers from high-tech areas such as the healthcare and aerospace industries.
Various Strategies for Export Growth
Doosan Infracore held 7.3% of the US machine tool market in 2005 but expects to increase its share to 8.0% (for fourth place) by the end of this year. Plans call for an additional 27% sales increase next year to reach US$200 million.
To make this happen, partnerships with dealers are being bolstered, and a new technical center is opening in Detroit to boost sales of top-end models in the Midwest, the nation's leading machine tool region. Technical support, training and after-sales services are all being enhanced and expanded as well.
The company aims to sell US$530 million worth of machine tools outside Korea in 2006, a 28% increase over last year's export figure. By August, exports had already reached US$360 million, so company officials are confident of The first warehouse at the Ansan Parts Center, their reaching the goal for the year.
